Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story light gray house with a gabled roof and covered porch, flanked by large green trees, with a concrete walkway crossing a lawn to the street in low sunlight.

A compressor that ran fine at shutdown may have a failing contactor, a refrigerant leak, or a capacitor on its way out, and none of that shows until the system is asked to start again. Homes in Niobrara County, WY run cooling about two months a year, from July through August. Sitting off for most of the calendar does not reset a worn part. A contractor diagnosing a repair here checks the components that carry the full load of starting and stopping through those weeks: the contactor, the run capacitor, and the compressor terminals. Whatever degraded last July is still degraded now.

Ductwork laid into a house carries the history of every system that has run through it, and in Niobrara County that history is long. Half the homes in Niobrara County, Wyoming were built in 1962 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). When a central AC unit fails in a house like that and a contractor opens it up, the question is not simply which component broke. It is whether that component is still manufactured in a form the system will accept. Older refrigerant circuits, proprietary blower assemblies, and control boards from discontinued product lines take parts that take time to find, and sometimes cannot be found at all.

The Parts of a Central AC a Contractor Checks First

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house showing interior ductwork, an air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines, with simple furniture in the rooms.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad along a wall or at the side of the home. It holds the compressor and the condenser coil, and when either of those fails, the system stops shedding heat altogether. The compressor is where a contractor looks first, because it is the part most likely to be behind a sudden shutdown or a system that runs but does not cool.

Inside the house, the air handler or furnace cabinet holds the evaporator coil and the blower fan. The evaporator coil pulls heat out of the air moving across it, and a frozen or dirty coil will cut airflow and cooling at the same time. The blower fan pushes conditioned air into the ducts, and the refrigerant lines running between the two units carry the working fluid that the whole process depends on.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines which parts and conditions apply to your specific home.
