A contractor quoting a central AC install in Platte County has to get the load calculation right the first time. Homes in Platte County, WY run cooling in a single month of the year, July. The compressor, the condenser fan, and the contactor sit idle through most of the calendar, and an undersized or poorly matched system will not show the strain gradually. It shows all at once, in July, when demand is at its peak and every other homeowner is calling too. That first startup after a long idle period is when a loose connection, a refrigerant charge that is slightly off, or a contactor at the edge of its service life declares itself.

Ductwork sized and routed for equipment that has long since been replaced is what a contractor runs into in a significant share of Platte County homes. Half the homes in Platte County, Wyoming were built in 1976 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That history means the question a contractor answers first on an installation job is whether the existing duct system will carry the airflow a new central AC unit demands, and the answer requires physical inspection, not a look at the permit record. Where the ducts fall short, the electrical service is the next check. Both variables can add scope to a job, and both are invisible until someone opens the house.

What a Central AC System Is Made Of

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior rooms with ductwork and an indoor air handler connected to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at ground level or on the side of the house, and it holds the compressor and the condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace holds the evaporator coil and the blower, and it lives in a mechanical room, basement, attic, or closet.

A copper refrigerant line set runs between the two units, carrying refrigerant back and forth through the wall or floor. A thermostat on a main living-area wall ties the whole system together, telling the blower and compressor when to run.

The drawing beside this text shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor will determine what configuration fits your specific home.
